A Data User's Guide to School Performance, Home
Values & Property Taxes
As parents go about choosing schools for their children,
SchoolMatters.com can help them compare test results, graduation rates,
demographics, and spending levels in different school districts. But
parents thinking about buying a home also need information about real
estate prices and tax burdens. They may want to know which districts
have the highest performance for a given level of "affordability."
This Guide shows how data from SchoolMatters can be combined with other
public sources of information in New York to address this issue. For
illustration purposes, this Guide presents a combination of indicators
for 52 school districts in the lower Hudson Valley. Those indicators
include:
- each district's summary performance on 18 state tests, as measured by the percentage of scores that meet (Levels 3 & 4) or exceed (Level 4) state standards;
- the median price of homes sold in each school district for more than $100,000;
- the average residential property tax bill levied by each district;
- the coefficient of dispersion (an estimate of how equitably property taxes are distributed among homeowners in the same city or town);
- each district's total revenue per student; and
- each district's proportional enrollment of economically-disadvantaged students.
A summary table of these indicators appears below. Each column heading
can be clicked to sort the data by that indicator. More detailed
information and a description of these indicators is found in the Guide,
which can be downloaded by clicking on the link on the left side of this
page. The Guide has been written to assist users in understanding and
interpreting the data for themselves, since families have different
needs and preferences.
