All UMKC students must follow the University’s Student Conduct Code and the Rules of Procedure in Student Conduct Matters. Law students must also follow the School of Law Honor Code. The Honor Code sets out what constitutes academic dishonesty, how the School investigates allegations, and what sanctions may apply.

If the Associate Dean finds sufficient evidence of academic misconduct, the case is referred to the Student Prosecutor. The Student Prosecutor conducts their own investigation and may drop the case due to insufficient evidence.

Grand Jury

If the Student Prosecutor finds sufficient evidence, they may convene a grand jury. Law students with no conflict of interest sit on the grand jury and determine if there’s a violation of the Honor Code based on the evidence available.

Hearing

If the grand jury finds you violated the Honor Code, the case proceeds to a formal hearing. At the hearing, your representative can speak on your behalf and cross-examine witnesses. The Dean will review the decision, but they cannot reverse a “not guilty” verdict.

Appeals

If you’re found responsible for academic misconduct, you may have the right to request a review by petition or file an appeal.

Petition

If you’re not suspended or expelled, you can petition the Chancellor to review the decision. You have ten days from receiving the decision to file a petition. The Chancellor can agree or refuse to review the decision, and their conclusions are final.

Appeal

If you’re suspended or expelled, you can file an appeal with the Chancellor. You have twenty days from receiving the decision to file an appeal. The Chancellor reviews the decision and considers any relevant documentation. The Chancellor’s decision is final.
